What is a frenemy?
“Frenemy” is a blend of “friend” and “enemy.” It describes a relationship that looks friendly on the surface, while somewhere deep down you’re competing with the other person or feeling a little petty toward them. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word’s first known use in English dates back to 1891.
This quiz comes from Japan, where in 2026 “frenemy” became one of the trending words among high school students, according to Shibuya Trend Research, a survey run by INg Inc. There, it’s mostly used as a light joke between close friends, as in “That’s so frenemy.”
Behaviors that get called frenemy-ish include things like complimenting someone with a smile while silently roasting them, struggling to be happy about a friend’s good news and turning the conversation back to yourself, passing along something you heard, or acting like everyone’s best friend in every group. These are small habits that everyone has to some degree, and many of us picked them up as a way to keep our relationships running smoothly.
This Frenemy Quiz is for laughing at those habits in yourself. It isn’t meant for labeling a specific person as a frenemy. And while a typical “fake friend quiz” or “toxic friend quiz” asks you to judge whether someone around you is secretly two-faced, this quiz only looks at your own habits. It describes your social style as one of 16 types, based on 4 habits: how you say what you think, how much you compare yourself, what you do with gossip and how you connect with people.
How the quiz works
Based on your choices in 20 scenes, this quiz calculates your Frenemy Score and your type separately.
16 types
- Saying What You Think: Straight (S) / Sugarcoated (O)When you’re unhappy, disagree or just aren’t interested, do you show it as is, or wrap it in a smile and let it pass?
- Comparing Yourself: Own Lane (J) / Comparing (K)When a friend gets good news, can you just be happy for them and move on, or do you line it up next to your own life?
- What You Do With Gossip: Lets It Go (N) / Passes It On (M)When you hear someone’s story or secret, does it stop with you, or do you find yourself passing it to the next person?
- How You Connect: Few & Deep (F) / Wide & Light (H)Do you go deep with the same few people, or do you have a “close friend” in every group?
Each question belongs to one of 4 axes, with 5 questions per axis. For each axis, we count which side your choices fell on, and the side you picked in 3 or more of the 5 questions is your result for that axis. Put the 4 axis results together and you get one of the 16 types. Because your type and your Frenemy Score are calculated separately, two people with the same type can have different percentages.
Frenemy Score (%)
Each of the 4 options has a “frenemy strength” from 0 to 3. Your Frenemy Score is the total strength of your 20 choices divided by the maximum (60). The highest-strength option isn’t always in the same position.
The 5 levels
- 0–14%: Sweet & Mild
- 15–34%: A Little Kick
- 35–54%: Medium Heat
- 55–74%: Hot (Swears It’s Mild)
- 75–100%: Extra-Hot Full Course
It’s the same 20 questions every time, and the order of the options never changes. Answer the same way and you’ll get the same result.

FAQ
- What is the Frenemy Score?
- It adds up how “frenemy-ish” your choices were across 20 scenes and shows the total from 0 to 100%. It goes up the more you pick things like wrapping your real opinion in a smile, comparing yourself with others, passing along what you hear and being friendly with every group. The score is split into 5 levels, each with its own name.
- How are the 16 types decided?
- By which side your answers lean toward on each of 4 axes: Saying What You Think (Straight / Sugarcoated), Comparing Yourself (Own Lane / Comparing), What You Do With Gossip (Lets It Go / Passes It On) and How You Connect (Few & Deep / Wide & Light). See “How the quiz works” for details.
- Can this tell me about my friends too?
- It only tells you about yourself. You answer about your own behavior, and the result is for looking back at your own social habits. Please don’t use it to answer on someone else’s behalf or to label a specific person a “frenemy.”
- Does a high score mean I’m a bad person?
- Not necessarily. What this quiz looks at is small, scene-by-scene habits. Wrapping your real opinion in a smile and comparing yourself with others are things everyone does to some extent. Think of a high percentage as meaning “someone with lots of stories to tell.”
- Will I get the same result every time?
- The questions and the order of the options are the same every time, so if you answer the same way, you’ll get the same result. If your mood changes how you answer, your result will change too.
- How is this different from a fake friend quiz or a toxic friend quiz?
- A fake friend quiz or toxic friend quiz usually tries to judge whether someone has a hidden two-faced side. The Frenemy Quiz only looks at your own habits and describes your social style as one of 16 types, based on 4 habits: how you say what you think, how much you compare yourself, what you do with gossip and how you connect.
- Are my answers sent anywhere?
- No. All calculations happen in your browser, and your progress is saved only on this device. However, the link you use to share your result does include your answers to the 20 questions.
- Do I need to sign up?
- No. It’s free, and you can take the quiz as many times as you like.
Please note
This is an entertainment quiz for laughing at your own social habits. It doesn’t decide what kind of person you are, or whether any of your relationships are good or bad. Please don’t use it as a reason to label any one person a “frenemy.”
