SLOTH

The Boulder That Does Not Move

Without a reason to change, this pace holds.

You decide whether to move or stay by your current track rather than the mood around you. It is not idleness: you keep the same method until a reason to change appears. Starting takes a push, and what you have started runs for a long time.

What this sin looks like

When Sloth comes out strongest, you decide whether to move or stay by your current track rather than the mood around you. It does not mean doing nothing. It means keeping the same method and the same stride until a reason to change turns up.

Because of that, starting usually needs something external: an invitation, a deadline, a change in circumstances. Past that point, you keep going for a long time.

Where it shows up day to day

  • Trace why you started something and you usually find an external trigger
  • You leave a settled procedure alone until it causes trouble
  • A better method recommended to you does not move you if the current one suffices
  • Habits, once formed, continue without needing attention

Where it works as a strength

It works hardest where continuing is what matters. You pass straight through the stretch where most people get bored and let go. In work and study that compound, that becomes the decisive difference.

You can also act as the ballast when everyone around you wants to change direction on momentum. Because you ask for the reason in words, impulsive changes get sorted out rather than spinning.

Where it spins its wheels

"There is no reason to change" and "I am not looking for the reason" appear identical from outside. While the trouble stays small the track holds, so by the time you notice, the range of options can have narrowed.

The distinction is hard to draw from inside too. Am I holding this, or am I putting the decision off? That is the one thing worth separating deliberately.

How it sits with the other sins

Wrath has the opposite starting condition: it moves from the one point that does not make sense, while Sloth waits until the reasons line up. Gluttony contrasts too, widening its range where Sloth keeps it.

Combined with Pride, you keep a chosen direction for a long time without doubting it. The drive is at its highest, the review at its lowest.

If this came out for you

Set your own review date as a stand-in for the external trigger. Even a monthly slot asking "is this still worth continuing?" lets you choose the track deliberately.

Being able to continue is itself a scarce ability. Choose what to continue at the start and this sin does most of the work for free.
