What this sin looks like
When Gluttony comes out strongest, skimming the surface is not enough. Understand one thing and your hand reaches for what is behind or beside it. Knowledge and experience you gain are not endings but entrances.
This is not about appetite. It points at a range that keeps widening: the more you fill, the sooner the next thirst shows.
Where it shows up day to day
- Once you get into something, you want the surrounding gear and references as a set
- You start looking one thing up and end up well past what you meant to know
- "I have the gist" does not stop you; you check the exceptions and the background
- Each new interest brings another interest with it
Where it works as a strength
Because you do not stop at shallow understanding, you notice premises and exceptions others skip. Knowledge accumulates across fields, and ideas that connect distant subjects start to appear.
Relearning is fast for the same reason. The resistance at the entrance is low, so you get deep in a new area quickly.
Where it spins its wheels
A range that keeps widening stretches the collecting phase without landing. You can believe you are waiting for the preparation to be ready while actually opening the next entrance.
Holding what you gathered without using it is the other common shape. Taking in feels good, and making something is a different satisfaction, so the second one needs time set aside for it deliberately.
How it sits with the other sins
Lust runs the other way: Gluttony draws the outside world in, Lust sends what is inside out. When both are strong, you take something in and hand it on right away.
Sloth handles range in the opposite way, keeping it where Gluttony widens it. Combined with Envy, what other people hold becomes visible as the next entrance.
