The Eye That Measures Distance
The gap to someone else moves the needle.
You take other people’s holdings and circumstances as the distance between you and them. When someone has what you do not, that gap stays with you. Whether it lifts you or sinks you, the comparing itself is what moves the feeling.

What this sin looks like
When Envy comes out strongest, you receive other people's results and circumstances as "the gap between us". When someone has what you do not, that distance stays with you.
Whether it turns into effort or into a slump differs from person to person. What this sin measures is not which way you fall but the fact that comparing itself moves the feeling a great deal.
Where it shows up day to day
- When someone you saw as an equal pulls ahead, the gap snags you
- When someone takes an opportunity you wanted, the difference stays on your mind
- After hearing about someone's situation, you start counting your own position
- Nearby people, not distant ones, are the ones that register
Where it works as a strength
You can locate yourself accurately. Because the eye for gaps is working, the standard required and the element you lack come out in concrete terms. Your effort has a target rather than a vague direction.
You also observe other people's results in volume. Watching closely what is working makes you good at judging which part is worth copying.
Where it spins its wheels
Without choosing who you compare against, there is no end. A target is always available and a gap can always be constructed. And in the time spent counting the gap, nothing moves on your side.
Escaping by shrinking the other person's achievement is the other common shape. It is briefly easier, and it throws away the part you could have learned from.
How it sits with the other sins
Combined with Gluttony, what other people hold becomes visible as the next entrance and the volume you take in rises. Lust also routes through other people, but Lust tries to hand something over while Envy measures the distance.
Combined with Gloom, you take in the gap and then sink for a long time. That pairing is costly, so fixing the target and the frequency is the practical move.
If this came out for you
Choose who you compare yourself against and this sin becomes strong fuel. Not everyone, just the one or two people you want to learn from right now. That alone points the eye for gaps forward.
When you find a gap, write down one concrete thing that differs before processing the feeling. An abstract gap only hurts; a concrete one can be turned into action.
